Established in February 1892, the Math on Deshbandhu Road in Baranagar is the second monastery of the Ramakrishna order.

It remained the order's headquarters till 1898, when the order finally moved to Nilambar Mukherjee's garden house in Belur.

In February 1897, Swami Vivekananda returned to this Math following a trip to the west to attend the parliament of religions. Between 1892 and 1898, this Math was the abode of Sri Ramakrishna's direct disciples, senior officials of the order said.

The Alambazar Math was earlier managed by the Ramakrishna Satyananda Ashram. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission took over it in November 2022 on the birth anniversary of Swami Vijnanananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.

"We have decided to repair, renovate and build a memorial at the Alambazar Math, which remains a vital relic of the Ramakrishna movement," said Swami Suvirananda, the general secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. "The foundation-stone laying by Swami Gautamananda, vice-president of the order, marks a historic moment for all the devotees and followers."

The Math, spread over close to a bigha of land, was declared a "dangerous building" by the Baranagar municipality a few years ago after portions of the structure started peeling off.

The authorities of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission have decided that a new building, resembling the original Math, will be built at the present address.

A committee will oversee the work.
