The rainy spell is likely to continue for at least a couple more days in Calcutta, the Met office said on Saturday evening.
The city may not end up getting as much rain as it did between Friday evening and Saturday evening but the overcast conditions will remain for at least the next 48 hours, a Met official said.
The city has received almost non-stop rain since Friday night. However, the showers have come in the form of a drizzle, not sharp but nagging.
The Met office recorded around 60mm of rain in Alipore between 8.30pm on Friday and 8.30pm on Saturday. In Met parlance, 60mm of rain in 24 hours qualifies as heavy.
Some other parts of the city were rainier, according to figures from the pumping stations of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation.
A Met bulletin issued on Saturday predicted “enhanced rainfall activity” in the state till October 4.
“Yesterday’s low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal now lies as a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and adjoining West Bengal during the next 24 hours,” it said.
Heavy rain is likely in South and North 24-Parganas and several other districts of south Bengal till October 3. Calcutta does not officially figure in them. But the city is likely to keep getting rain.
“The system is not expected to go too far away from Calcutta. It is likely to be rainy at least till Tuesday,” said the official.
The districts of north Bengal are likely to get heavy rain till October 4.
