Train services were affected in the Howrah-Bardhaman section for the second consecutive day after hundreds of passengers blocked the tracks in Hooghly’s Khanyan for over four hours on Tuesday.
A set of local trains and at least three Howrah-bound express trains were delayed. The passengers, mainly those who use local trains to go to their workplaces in Kolkata, are protesting from Monday by blocking tracks at different stations in Hooghly alleging that the irregular services of trains were causing them difficulties.
On Monday, the passengers had blocked railway tracks at four different stations for over three hours in Hooghly.
Eastern Railway authorities had cancelled many trains mainly in Howrah-Bardhaman main section following an ongoing work of laying the third line in the route from September 3 to September 13.
The work is in progress between Rosulpur and Shaktigarh under the section and train services would become better and faster once the work is done, a railway official said.
The protesters, however, pointed out that the work could have been done during the pandemic.
