Eight people have been arrested for allegedly cheating people in the US by posing as representatives of a software company and asking them to upgrade the software on their desktops or laptops.
Raids were conducted by officers of the anti-rowdy squad of the detective department at two locations on Friday night.
Five men were arrested in an office on the fourth-floor of a building on Rabindra Sarani in Girish Park and three were arrested on the fifth-floor of a high-rise building on Jan Nagar Road near Park Circus.
“The men working at these call centres used to introduce themselves as employees of a software company and convince their targets to upgrade the software on their laptops and desktops. The men would send a link for the upgrade. If the client clicked on it, their desktop or laptop would be compromised,” said an officer.
The accused have been charged under IPC sections of cheating, forgery, fraud, criminal conspiracy and sections of the Information Technology act.
