The look: Anirban Das’s beautiful pandal, illuminated by cinematographer Premendu Bikash Chaki, is inspired by Kangra paintings, patronised by Rajput rulers between the 17th and 19th centuries. The ragas are an important presence in the paintings alongside the dalliances of Radha-Krishna, hence the name of the theme Komolgandhar.
Acrylic sheets have been used with fibre moulding as replacements for mirror work. The golden, gray, silver and green colours used get reflected in the sheets and create a bright tapestry despite the limited use of colour. The stepwell architecture has been used in the boundary wall as well as in an inverted way on the roof.
The pandal is open on all sides and the idol sits looking a bit sidewise, with features as well as the ghomta overhead reminiscent of the women in Kangra paintings.
FD Block

Budget: Rs 50 lakh
The look: The beautiful pandal is a tribute to the dokra craft of Bankura. A decorator from Mecheda has used wood, cloth, paint and bamboo slices to create the 40ft pandal over four months. A Bankura horse stands at a side. Various dokra-inspired figurines, in a variety of shapes, stand on coves in the pandal walls. A stall will have craftsmen create some statuettes live as well as sell their ware.

Another attraction here is an underwater fish tunnel that has been set up in the park as part of the fair that sells everything from phuchka and achar to bags and ornaments. While the initial part is a walk by a series of aquariums, the fun is in the closing section of the tunnel where colourful fish swim beside one as also overhead in the horseshoe-shaped tank. Entry to the air-conditioned fish tunnel costs Rs 150.
Fun funda: A jatra, Joradighir Choudhury Paribar, will be staged on Dwadashi.

The look: A gigantic Shiva bust in fibre looks skyward, modelled on the Adiyogi statue in Coimbatore, inaugurated in 2019 by President Ramnath Kovind. While the original is 119ft, the one here is 60ft high. Twelve mini Shivalingas dot the pandal complex, standing for the 12 jyotirlingas. A five-minute light and sound show, costing Rs 25 lakh, will be held after sunset.

The look: The pandal is spice land, what with Vasco Da Gamadocking his four ships behind it, the sails of two each being visible on either side of the entry.
There are paintings of him and the sea route, on his ship etc. But what are attracting eyeballs are the spices, 400kg of them in 15 varieties, displayed in glass containers, in sacks and behind transparent barriers on the walls. Outside all around are cargo containers, which had been fabricated on site, indicating the continuance of the spice trade that had started with the Portuguese in 1498. The Chand saudagar saga is depicted on the chalchitra, linking the idol with the theme of maritime trade.

Oars have been painted to resemble snakes. The artistic idol by Sanatan Pal is placed before a black-and-white painting of sailing boats.

The theme music, by Kalyan Sen Barat, uses indigenous instruments.

The look: The pandal is a mini replica of the Jagannath temple of Puri, rising to a height of 76ft. A face of the Lord is in relief on the left during entry. Outside, an Arunstambha (sun pillar) stands with the sun’s charioteer seated on top, like it does outside the main gate in Puri.
Fun funda: Ten dhakis from Murshidabad are putting up the puja’s signature routines. This time 10 women dhakis have joined. There will be a conch shell-blowing contest on Saptami, bhog-cooking contest on Ashtami at noon and dhunuchi contest the same day at 7pm. On Dwadashi, Ramaprasad Banik’s satireMahabidya Primary will be staged by residents.
