A lawyer representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) told a court during the appearance of suspended Trinamul Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh on Thursday that the central agencies were neutral and only investigating alleged irregularities.

The comment was apparently an attempt at countering Ghosh’s remark during his last court appearance on April 20.

That day, Ghosh, an accused in the school job scam case, had said in regard to central investigating agencies: “If a ring determines who is influential, then imagine the quality of investigation done by them.”

He was referring to former education minister Partha Chatterjee, another accused in the case, who was found wearing two rings in judicial custody.

A lawyer representing the ED told a judge during Chatterjee’s virtual production on Wednesday last week that the rings on Chatterjee’s fingers showed how influential he was.

Ghosh had earlier alleged that the central agencies were pressuring him to implicate Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the case.

An ED lawyer said: “We are no one’s spokesperson. We do not see the colour (of any party). Our only responsibility is to look for scamsters.”

The court has extended Ghosh’s remand till June 19. The same day, Chatterjee and the other accused will be produced in the court.

Body found

The body of a 23-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan in a rented apartment in Netaji Nagar on Wednesday night. Police said the woman was from Bokaro in Jharkhand. She was taken to MR Bangur Hospital where she was declared dead.
