A man, who claimed to be a part-time teacher at a private BEd college in Basirhat, was arrested for allegedly stalking and molesting a 17-year-old girl.
Abhijit Biswas was arrested by Baguiati police on Wednesday after he had allegedly tried to sexually assault the complainant in the middle of the road in Kestopur’s Mission Bazar area in northeast Kolkata.
The teenager screamed for help upon which residents and shopkeepers caught the man and handed him over to police.
According to the complaint, the girl had met the man on December 14 after she came to know that he provides private tuition. He agreed to teach the girl and took her as well as her parents’ phone numbers.
In the complaint, the girl alleged that since that day the man had been harassing her and her family members with calls and text messages.
“On Wednesday, the man called the girl again to his tutorial to sort the issue and made indecent proposals,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate.
The police said they were checking the credentials of the man — an arts graduate — and are verifying whether he actually teaches at the BEd college.
The man was booked under IPC sections 509 (molestation), 354 D (stalking) and the relevant section under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
He was produced before a court in Barasat, which sent him to judicial custody.
