A postgraduate student at Presidency University, who is also a member of the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), has written to the dean of students asking on what basis the authorities decided that he and three other students were responsible for the “problems in and around” the campus and deserved to be punished.

Ankan Das, secretary of the TMCP unit at Presidency, has written to dean Arun Kumar Maity: “We, the students of Presidency University who have their ideology aligned with TMCP, politely request you to give us all reasons based on which you came to the conclusion that those particular students were responsible for all the problems in and around Presidency University during July-August 2022.”

Ankan and another student have been suspended from all academic activities in the current semester and debarred from admission to Hindu Hostel. The other two have been debarred from admission to the hostel.

In the letter that was emailed to Maity on Saturday, Ankan accused the dean and the university of being “hand-in-glove” with Left organisations. “You have completely surrendered to their wishes and... to pacify them you have victimised us,” says the letter.

Maity declined to comment when contacted by this newspaper.

“We were assaulted by SFI and IC supporters. We gave evidence in support of our claim, but we did not get justice,” Das told The Telegraph.
