Patient safety and better health are intrinsically related to the precision of surgery, a neurosurgeon said on Saturday while two surgeries by a doctor from Mumbai were live-streamed to a room filled with neurosurgeons.

The surgeries were done by Atul Goel, who conducted a large brain tumour surgery and another to remove a tumour in the pituitary gland of a patient. They were conducted at Medica Superspecialty Hospital. Goel was assisted by a team of doctors from Medica.

“We organised the live telecast for younger surgeons and others for whom it was a learning experience. An experienced surgeon will conduct surgeries with better precision and accuracy,” said L.N. Tripathy, director of Medica Institute of Neurological Diseases and senior vice-chairman of Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

Tripathy said during tumour removals, avoiding any damage to the tissues outside the tumour was very essential. Any damage to the tissues meant a patient’s safety and health had been compromised. “It could result in post-surgery complications,” he said.

In the case of brain surgeries, it is all the more important to avoid any impact on any other structure in the brain. “There are nerves, veins, arteries and brain tissues. They have to be protected,” he said.

Tripathy said over the years, newer techniques and instruments have aided surgeons to have more precise surgeries.
