A portion of the Bidhan Sarani in north Kolkata caved in on Saturday afternoon.
Civic officials said they had noticed a depression at the spot, close to Hedua Park, on Friday night and had tried to level it with some bricks. On Saturday the depression grew bigger and resulted in a cave-in. A six feet long and two-feet deep crater formed on the road.
Senior officers from the police and traffic guards reached the spot after some bystanders raised the alarm. The spot was cordoned off with guardrails.
A traffic police officer was posted at the spot.
“There is possibly some leakage in the brick sewer underneath the road that resulted in the cave-in,” a senior the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official said.
“We will start repairing the spot from Sunday morning,” said the KMC official.
