Apropos the report “Thana top cop as blood donor”, published on May 24, it was heart-warming to learn how Somnath Bhattacharyya, the inspector-in-charge of Technocity police station in New Town, donated blood for a Bangladeshi cancer patient who had come to Calcutta for treatment.

He must be lauded and will surely inspire many. Salute to him!

The image of the police has been taking a beating for a while now. In that context, it was an example set when a Bidhannagar Police officer donated blood to help a patient in need. I presume this act would be revive the reputation of the police force and inspire others to come forward for such noble causes.

I recently had a positive interaction with some police officers and want to share my experience. May this also be a cautionary note to readers on safeguarding against petty thieves.

I was walking on the foothpath of AK Block on the First Avenue, holding my mobile phone in my left hand. This was at about 8 in the morning when suddenly a young man snatched my phone and started running.

He could be caught with the help of a gentleman who was driving a scooter and some pedestrians. My phone was recovered and the police came to the spot in a couple of minutes when someone rang them up.

The officer, Biswanath Ghosh, and his accompanying colleagues, were very nice and the thief was handed over to them. ASI Tusar Kumar visited my residence 15 minutes later and noted down details of the incident. He briefed me about safety measures to avoid such incidents.

He asked me to keep the phone in the front pocket of my trousers, preferably with the pocket open at the top rather than on the sides, as seen on jeans. Or one should keep the phone inside pouches attached to the belt, he told me. Ladies should use sling bags around the neck.

Our neighbourhood has mostly elderly people as residents and I hope they follow these tips and stay safe from now on.

Nitai Mukhopadhyay,

AK Block
