Shivani Karmakar, 45, who was alone in her apartment on South Purbachal Hospital Road, was allegedly robbed of jewellery and money by a man who barged into the house when she answered the door around 11am, the police said.

The man allegedly tied the woman’s hands and feet with plastic straps and confined her in the washroom, the police have learnt.

Around the time of the alleged robbery, there were large crowds in a market on the road leading to the building. The robber’s face was covered, making it difficult to zero in on him from the available CCTV footage, an officer said.

The officer said the timing was unusual because no criminal would generally choose 11am to barge into a house.

“The man didn’t go around the house looking for valuables. The money and some jewellery were inside a chest of drawers and he picked them up,” he said.

According to the complaint lodged by the family, apart from snatching Shivani’s ornaments, the man tookRs 30,000 and four gold rings that were kept in an unlocked drawer attached to a table in one of the bedrooms.

“If it was a gang at work then more than one person would have entered the house. Others would have waited outside. But circumstantial evidence does not reveal this,” the officer said.

Shivani’s husband Samar Karmakar, a civil contractor, would keep some money in the house to meet his medical expenses. He suffers from kidney ailments, the officer said.

“Samar doesn’t run a big business and has no rivals. The family maintains a low profile in the area. The house is not covered with CCTVs,” the officer said. “We are working on a few leads.”
