Police arrested 25 people who had allegedly gathered outside Presidency Correctional Home in Alipore in south Kolkata with the intention to kill an inmate as soon as he stepped out on bail.
Munna Pandey, who the mob had allegedly planned to kill, had multiple criminal charges against him. He was allegedly involved in criminal activities in Kasba, Tiljala and Tangra in south and east Kolkata.
The police said he had stepped out of the jail around 2pm on Thursday when he was attacked by a group of around 40-50 men. The armed attackers were waiting for Pandey outside the jail in smaller groups.
“We had information that Pandey’s rival group, led by Sona Pappu, would be there to kill him the moment he stepped out. Our teams were deployed there,” said an officer. “We could arrest 25. The rest fled.”
Pandey was injured and taken to SSKM Hospital, from where he was discharged after treatment.
