Police said the men were headed towards Budge Budge from Taratala. After hitting the pothole, the biker lost control and rammed into the flyover’s guard wall. Under the impact, the pillion rider was thrown off his seat. He fell off the flyover and landed on Budge Budge Trunk Road below.

The accident happened around 1.30pm.

The cops took the pillion rider to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Late in the evening, the police identified the deceased as Shaktipada Maity of Dantan in West Midnapore. The bike rider, Santu Bera, too, is from Dantan. The police said both were in their late 20s.

“We have informed the relatives of the injured about the accident. The pillion rider was declared brought dead when we took him to a hospital nearby,” said a senior officer of Maheshtala police station.

Sampriti flyover, inaugurated in 2019, has remained one of the most accident-prone facilities prompting chief minister Mamata Banerjee to express her concerns at the spate of accidents during an administrative meeting in Sagar Island in December.
