A young woman who was riding pillion on her friend’s motorcycle on New Year’s Eve and fell off the vehicle after it crashed into a car on the Bypass-Rashbehari Avenue connector in Kasba succumbed to her injuries early on Wednesday.

“She had suffered very critical head injuries in the accident. Her condition
started deteriorating on Tuesday night,” said a hospital official.

Bandana was riding with her friend Sandip Shaw, 27, who suffered relatively minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital after treatment.

The police said the crash had happened around 11.50pm on Sunday when the bike
suddenly sped out of a
bylane off the connector and crashed into the car that was travelling along the thoroughfare.

“The pillion-rider was flung off the bike. She suffered serious injuries,” the police said.

Her body was released on Wednesday morning
and taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

“She worked at a private office in Garia,” a relative said.

Sandip’s father had told The Telegraph on Monday that his son and the pillion-rider both were wearing helmets.

The crash that claimed a young life was just one of the many examples of how vulnerable two-wheeler-riders are, especially if they violate traffic rules.

The police said the two-wheeler that Sandip and Bandana were riding had not slowed down at the intersection.

Kolkata police prosecuted more than 700 two-wheeler-riders for driving without helmets on New Year’s Eve. Several others were prosecuted for drink driving the same night.

“From the condition of the car and the bike, it was apparent that both vehicles were traveling at a high speed. Had the motorcycle been slower, the impact would not have been as grave as it turned out to be,” said an officer at Kasba police station.
