A pedestrian on the Park Street footpath was injured after a concrete chunk fell off from a portion of cornice of the Stephen Court building early on Sunday morning, police said.

The incident happened in front of 18, Park Street around 7.30am on Sunday.

Police said a portion of the cornice fell off and landed on the head of a pedestrian.

The injured person, identified by the police as Manoj Ramani, 40, is a resident of Russel Street.

“Ramani was taken to SSKM Hospital with head injuries. He received 10 to 12 stitches after which he was discharged from the hospital,” said an officer of Park Street police station.

A senior police officer said the nature of damage and injuries could have been more serious had the incident happened on a weekday when the footfall of pedestrians along the Park Street footpath is much higher compared to a lazy Sunday morning.

A senior official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation said that portions of the building had been recently renovated and that the structure was “not in a precarious condition.”

Police have cordoned off the area where the chunk fell to control access of pedestrians.

In March 2010, a fire had broken out in the Stephen Court that had killed more than 40 persons, some of whom were trapped inside the building. The building, which is occupied by residential and commercial establishments, had undergone renovation thereafter.
