A man was arrested for allegedly trying to buy a used motorcycle using fake currency notes from Patuli on the southern fringes of Kolkata on Thursday night.

Sagar Sanpui, a resident of Birji East, a neighbourhood in Patuli off Baishnabghata Patuli Township, had put up an advertisement on an online trading portal to sell his motorcycle a few weeks ago.

He received a call around 8.30pm on Thursday asking if he was still interested in selling his bike. “The prospective client told Sanpui that he was in a hurry and wanted to check the condition of the vehicle on Thursday night itself,” said an officer.

Sanpui asked the caller, later identified by the police as Sayan Das, to meet him near his house, police said.

Sanpui and his brother met Das in front of their home and handed over the motorbike for a test drive, the police said.

“Das took out a bundle of currency notes and gave it to Sanpui for the test drive. As he was about drive away the two brothers found that the notes were fake,” said an officer.

Sanpui and his brother caught Das and handed him over to Patuli police station.

“The bundle of papers he had given to the complainant were coloured print out of Rs 2000-rupee notes. He was in the habit of taking out coloured printouts of currency notes,” said the officer.

The police have seized a laptop and a colour printer from Das’s office.
