Several men who police said were at the Vedic Village birthday party where a young woman was allegedly gang-raped have been questioned by officers of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.
A senior officer of the commissionerate’s detective department said they spoke to several of those present at the birthday party in a bungalow to know about the sequence of events that led to the rape of the woman by four men, including a 23-year-old who had organised the party, on Thursday night.
On Saturday, four men in their early 20s — professionals and students — were arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape.
The men were arrested by multiple police teams from Rajarhat police station and the detective department of the commissionerate. Two of the accused were rounded up after a cop team intercepted the car they were travelling in at the Chingrighata crossing on EM Bypass.
An officer said the 23-year-old man, who works in a top accounting firm, had booked the bungalow in Vedic Village for Rs 9,000 to host the party.
“The booking was made on November 9. We are examining the booking process,” the officer said.
According to the officer, nearly everyone they spoke to has said they were drinking at the party and most guests had arrived at Vedic Village in their own vehicles.
The young woman who was allegedly gang-raped had been invited to the party by one of her female friends.
The complainant, who told the police that she knew the key accused, had arrived at the bungalow in an app cab.
She was allegedly offered a ride back home by at least two men, who are among those arrested. “The four arrested men have undergone a medico-legal examination and we are awaiting the report. We have questioned the arrested men individually. They will be questioned together as there are some inconsistencies in their statements,” said the officer.
A team of forensic science officials is likely to visit the bungalow on Monday and collect samples from the rooms where the party was held and the room where the woman was allegedly raped. The cops have collected CCTV footage from the cameras installed near the bungalow and entry and exit points of the resort.
Apart from the 23-year-old, the arrested accused are a student who is pursuing an undergraduate course in commerce at a New Town institution, a chartered accountant aspirant and a man who is interning with an Internet-based platform that streams OTT content, the officer said.
