The incident happened around 4.30pm on Saturday. It was reported to the police later in the evening when the woman managed to alert her neighbours, an officer said.

“The old woman was alone in the house. One of her children lives abroad. Two men had pressed the calling bell and the woman opened the door. They said they were from the electricity board and had come to check the meter,” said an officer of Parnasree police station.

The men barged into the house and gagged her so that she could not shout for help.

The men took gold jewellery that the woman was wearing, the police said.

Cops said the house was ransacked. The exact amount or quantity of valuables stolen was yet to be ascertained till Saturday night.
