A man working as a bandmaster in a Park Circus bar has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a woman who worked as a crooner.
Officers of Kasba police station said they received a complaint from the woman on Tuesday alleging that the accused — Gagan Kumar, alias Ranveer John, 40 — had tried to rape her on the night of November 29, 2022.
“We received the complaint on Tuesday and started a case under IPC sections dealing with attempt to rape, outrage of modesty, disrobing and criminal intimidation,” said an officer of the south-suburban division of the city police.
The police raided the bar and arrested John late on Tuesday. “According to the complaint, John had called the victim to his apartment on Rajdanga Main Road. She alleged that the accused tried to rape her and threatened her with dire consequences if she filed a complaint,” said an officer.
An officer said they were considering getting the complainant’s statement recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. In cases of crimes against women, the victim’s statement recorded in the presence of the magistrate is considered as primary evidence in court
Doctor held
A doctor was arrested on charges of rape and false assurances of marriage. Police said a woman alleged that he had applied for online registration of marriage. But he was going to marry another woman this week.
