A family travelling from Raidighi in South 24-Parganas district to Esplanade and then onwards to Birbhum in a bus got its red trolley bag swapped with a bag of a fellow passenger on Thursday morning.

When the bus was crossing Behala tram depot in southwest Kolkata, Nazrul Khan spotted his red suitcase that contained his wife’s jewellery and Rs 6,000 was missing from the luggage rack. There was a smaller red bag instead. Khan and his family alighted the bus and went to Behala police station to deposit the bag and report the loss of his suitcase.

Both the bags could be returned to their original owners. Cops found an address — Satyajit Roy Sarani in Behala — in an LPG cylinder receipt inside the small bag. Owner Rajkumar Jana was apparently worried about his lost bag. “He immediately handed over the suitcase,” said an officer.

The cops found that Jana was carrying his child in his arms. In a hurry to get off at Behala, he picked up the wrong bag.
