About 30 former students at Jadavpur University who were still staying at the main hostel have left the hostel following a notice issued by the university on Thursday night stating that “no passed-out students, as well as outsiders” would be allowed to stay in the hostel.
A postgraduate student who stays at Jadavpur University Main Hostel said the former students stopped entering the hostel from Thursday night.
The names of several former students cropped up in the police probe into the death of first-year student Swapnadeep Kundu, who is suspected to have jumped from the second floor of the hostel late on Wednesday. There were allegations that he had been ragged.
The JU dean of students, Rajat Roy, who on Thursday night asked the hostel superintendents to send the names of the former students or outsiders who were staying at the hostels, told The Telegraph: “We are in the process of drawing up the exact figure (of such individuals).”
He said all first-year students at the main hostel — around 25 — were temporarily shifted to New Boys’ Hostel, located on the JU campus, on Thursday night.
The main hostel is next to Jadavpur police station, about 400m from the campus.
A first-year student who has been shifted to New Boys’ Hostel said he had spoken to Swapnadeep on Wednesday night.
“We were at the dinner table. Swapnadeep said he was scared. He was sweating profusely. When I asked him what was he scared of? He said he would tell me later. A few hours later, I heard that he had jumped from the balcony,” the student said.
“I went into trauma after his death. The shifting has helped me,” he said.
