Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous) in Narendrapur will screen aspirants in masters programmes through online home assignments and viva voce this year so that students are not admitted on the strength of marks alone.
Calcutta University recently declared that close to 100 per cent candidates cleared the BA, BSc and BCom exams with many students securing a first class.
Swami Shastrajnananda, the principal of the college, said the final selection in English would be done on the basis of marks obtained in an online written test (home assignment carrying 50 marks) and interview scores (30).
Last year, the marks of BA English honours will be considered 50 apart from scores in home assignment (50) and viva voce (30). The final selection was based on 130 marks.
“This year, 50 per cent will be only the cut-off for applying,” said an official of the college.
Dates and times for online written tests and viva-voce for each subject have been uploaded on the college website.
In physics, the final selection will be done on aggregate percentage of marks obtained in honours papers (out of 50) along with scores obtained in online tests (out of 20) and viva-voce (out of 30).
In computer science, candidates will be screened on marks obtained in honours papers (converted to 50) and marks secured in viva-voce (50).
Science aspirants last year had to appear only for viva voce in physics and computer science through video call/audio call/ WhatsApp call.
In chemistry, the candidates will be screened on the basis of marks obtained in BSc chemistry honours and viva-voce.
In physics last year, while making the final selection, marks in BSc physics honours was converted to 100.
“This year the college has designed different methods for specific subjects so that the students are screened on the basis of command over the subject,” said a college official.
The college, till 2019, selected students based on their entrance test scores and graduation marks.
“Admission tests cannot be held under the prevailing circumstances. The screening layers have been tweaked further so that admission is as much based on the marks as it is on the applicant’s grasp over the subject,” said a teacher of the college.
Although the state government has barred the state-aided colleges and universities from conducting any admission test for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, autonomous institutions like Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, and St Xavier’s College don’t come under the ambit of the restriction.
