A 38-year-old resident of Shyampukur in north Kolkata died of dengue at a private hospital in Baranagar on Tuesday afternoon.
Malina Das, who was a resident of Khirod Bidya Binod Avenue, was admitted to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital around 8pm on Monday, said Bapi Ghosh, councillor of Ward 7 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
This is the fifth known case of dengue death in the city this year.
All five deaths have been reported in the last 10 days. Over 800 dengue cases have been reported in the city since January.
A senior official of the state health department said comparatively more dengue cases were being reported from Kolkata, North 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad and Darjeeling.
Ghosh said Das had tested positive for dengue about a week ago. “She was advised hospital admission by a doctor, but she did not get herself admitted.
When we came to know about her condition, we got her admitted to RG Kar hospital on Monday evening. Her condition was already severe by then,” said Ghosh.
At night, she needed ICU care and was shifted to a private hospital in Baranagar as an ICU bed was not immediately available at RG Kar hospital, Ghosh said.
The woman passed away around noon on Tuesday, Ghosh said.
The death certificate mentioned dengue fever, sepsis and multi-organ failure as causes of Das’s death.
