An alleged associate of Vicky Halder, the key accused in the twin murders at a house on Kankulia Road in south Kolkata on October 17, was arrested from Parulia in South 24-Parganas on Friday.

Police said Sanjay Mondal, 34, who was rounded up on Friday, was present inside the house when Subir Chaki, 61, managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd, and his driver Rabin Mondal, 65, were murdered. The house, off Golpark in Gariahat, was Chaki’s ancestral property. He and Mondal were found dead inside on the night of October 17.

Sanjay was the fourth accused arrested in connection with the murders. Among the others behind bars was Vicky’s mother Mithu Halder. Vicky is still on the run. “Sanjay was directly involved in the murders,” said an officer.

Preliminary investigations revealed Sanjay was a Toto driver and lived close to the construction site on Fern Road where Vicky worked as a site supervisor. Officers said Vicky had possibly lured Sanjay into the crime with the promise of quick money.

A day before the murders, Sanjay had a long chat with Vicky near the site, officers have learnt after speaking to some of Vicky’s colleagues.

The sleuths hope Sanjay would be able to shed light on Vicky’s whereabouts.
