A 49-year-old man from Bidhanpally in Dum Dum was arrested on Saturday for allegedly creating a fake website of Webel and duping at least two firms of nearly Rs 1.7 crore by floating fake tenders.
An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said Chandrim Banerjee was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a senior Webel official in September last year.
According to the complainant, Banerjee and one of his associates had created a fake email address with the URL CEO@WTL.org.in and a fake website that had logos matching those of Webel and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, the officer said.
“Using the website and the email address, Banerjee and an associate of his floated fake tenders in the name of Webel and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation,” said the officer.
During the course of the investigation, a senior officer of the commissionerate said that they had found that at least Rs 1.7 crore had been taken from two firms who had applied for these “fraudulent tenders”.
“Apart from these two firms, Banerjee collected money from others as well,” said the officer.
Banerjee was arrested at his rented house in Dum Dum. A Salt Lake court sent him to police custody for five days.
The police are looking for his associate.
