A man has been detained in connection with the death of a 72-year-old man whose decomposed body was found in his house in Nagerbazar on Wednesday, police said.

The man has reportedly told the police that he had visited the house of the victim, Kalyan Bhattacharya, on September 17 to drive his car.

“He said he had met Bhattacharya a few days ago after the victim posted an advertisement on Facebook seeking the services of a driver,” an officer said. “The man had gone to Digha after September 17.”

A BMW 6-series car that Bhattacharya had purchased in December for Rs 80 lakh and his pet dog were missing till Friday evening, the police said.

Bhattacharya, who the police said was unmarried, owned multiple properties.

“We have found a purported note in which Bhattacharya had declared that he wanted to donate his properties to a philanthropic organisation. We are yet to verify if this was a proper will,” an officer said.

“Neighbours said Bhattacharya would hardly socialise with them. But they also said visitors would turn up from time to time.”
