North Bengal: Family members accused in murders

Two separate incidents of murder involving family members were reported from north Bengal.

In Malda, a woman was allegedly stabbed by her husband in Shimal area under Pukhuria police station of the district around 9pm on Tuesday.

Police sources said Supriya, 35, was married to Sujit Singh 11 years ago. They have an 8-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. Some time ago, Supriya started living separately.

According to cops, on Tuesday, Sujit called Supriya and asked her to meet him. “When Supriya reached, it is learnt Sujit stabbed her several times,” said a police source.

She died at Malda Medical College and Hospital. The husband is absconding.

In Cooch Behar district, a man was allegedly stoned to death by his younger brother at Satgram village under Mathabhanga police station on Tuesday around 10pm.

Police sources said victim Zakir Hossain, 40, and his four brothers met to resolve an old land dispute.

“Dulal Mia, 37, the youngest brother, turned violent and started hurling stones at Zakir, who suffered grievous injuries. He died at Mathabhanga subdivisional hospital,” said a family member.

Dulal fled, the police said.
