A two-storeyed residential building at Mandeville Garden caught fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials of the fire department said the wooden furniture and wooden decor in a room caught fire, possibly from an electrical source, causing smoke and flames.

Four fire tenders were sent to the spot to douse the flames. Family members who live in the building were not trapped or injured, officers of Gariahat police station said.

“One of the rooms on the first floor had a wooden finish which caught fire. The bed and false ceiling in that room were gutted,” said a senior police officer of the south-east division.

The family members were home when the fire was first reported around 3.30 pm. Smoke was spotted billowing out of the building and caught the attention of many passers-by.

Located in the heart of a residential neighbourhood, the building at 1D Mandeville Garden is a few metres off Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue and is surrounded by residential blocks.

The police said the road approaching the building was wide enough to accommodate fire tenders.

“The fire was doused by 5 pm. We ensured there was no impact on the traffic movement on the main road. There is a tendency that vehicles slow down at the sight of a fire tender,” said an officer of the traffic department.

The family members stepped out of the building as the fire fighters used hose pipes to water the affected room.

A senior officer of the state fire and emergency services department said that given the location of the building and the fact that it is surrounded by multiple residential buildings, four fire tenders were sent. Only one or two were required to be used.

“The fire appears to have started from an electrical source. There were a lot of household articles that caught fire and caused the smoke,” the officer in the fire department said.
