Officers probing the death of 52-year-old Chaitali Mitra, who died after a free fall in an elevator that crashed from the third floor, contacted the company entrusted with maintaining the lift.

Officials of the company reportedly told the police on Wednesday that they did not have any annual maintenance contract with the owner of Amrapali Geriatric Home on Rajdanga Main Road, where the accident happened. The company has its office in Mathurapur Prantik Pally, Sonarpur.

“They said they had been hired on a need-basis and that they had submitted a list of elevator parts that needed to be changed,” said an officer in Lalbazar.

The company claimed they were not given the work order to carry out the project, the officer said.

The police said they were verifying the company’s claims.

A suo motu case under IPC Sections 287, 338 and 114 has been indexed at Kasba police station against the personnel responsible for the maintenance of the machinery of the lift, the police said on Tuesday.

One of the investigators said they were trying to find out if the elevator had a licence to operate.
