Her body was found on the ground behind the maternity block on the hospital compound. Police said it was a suspected case of suicide.

Achhiya Bibi, in her 20s, who is from Sandeshkhali in South 24-Parganas, was last seen leaving the maternity ward on Sunday where she had been admitted on October 26. She gave birth to a girl child on October 27, the police said.

The woman’s body underwent post-mortem on Monday, which revealed multiple fractures in her ribs and spinal cord.

The cause of her death is due to “fall from height,” the police said. An unnatural death case has been registered with the Beniapukur police station.

“We have found CCTV footage that showed the woman walking out of the maternity ward and going towards the part of the building where her body has been found on the ground floor. It is suspected that she slipped out of an open window on that stretch,” said an officer.

The police said they have not received any specific complaint from the family of the woman. Her husband is a van-rickshaw puller, the police said.
