The New Town authorities have started repairing bamboo fences on median dividers across all three action areas from Monday.
An official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said bamboo fences put up on median dividers got damaged over the time.
“Now there are gaping holes in the bamboo fences. Pedestrians as well as animals are crossing over the median dividers through the gaps on several arterial roads
across New Town,” said the official.
Another senior NKDA official said that these fences play a crucial role in preventing accidents as most are installed on the Major Arterial Road (MAR) that cuts across New Town as well as other major roads in Action Area I, II and III of New Town.
Debashis Sen, the NKDA chairman, told Metro on Monday that the bamboo fences get damaged because of a variety of reasons, including people breaking them to create crossover points near bus stops and other key points. Cows and buffaloes that graze on the dividers damage the fences as well.
“We have been facing problems like these for several years now. However we also don’t want to install metal barriers as we always focus on eco-friendly items to create infrastructure in New Town,” Sen said.
According to an official, a survey was carried out to locate the areas with damaged fences.
The tender process for carrying out the repairs had already been initiated.
