The authorities in New Town are readying more than 100 pumps, sandbags (to increase the height of the canal banks) and teams equipped with tools to remove tree branches from roads in preparation for Cyclone Mocha.
A set of guidelines will be issued for the residents’ welfare associations of all housing complexes in the township, said an official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA).
The NKDA will open a control room, which will function round-the-clock, if there is any indication that the cyclone will hit Bengal, the official said. Residents can call the control room if they face any problem during the storm.
The official said they have prepared the guidelines based on their experience of previous cyclones such as Amphan.
“High-powered portable pumps that drain out water are being requisitioned. They will be deployed in areas that are close to the Bagjola canal, Kestopur canal and other canals,” the official said.
“Portable pumps will also be installed in low-lying places that are prone to waterlogging.” Earthmoving and tree-cutting equipment like chainsaws are being readied to remove tree branches and uprooted trees from roads. There will be specialised teams that will work in tandem with other agencies, such as the fire and police departments, to clear roads.
“The NKDA is also keeping sandbags ready and will place it along the banks of the Bagjola canal. That will help prevent flooding of stretches along the canal if there is a downpour,” the official said.
“As for the other canals, water is unlikely to flow over the banks.”
