The new Tallah bridge in north Kolkata, coming up in place of a dilapidated structure that was razed last year, will be ready by April next year, PWD engineers said on Monday.
A team of senior engineers involved in the project recently reviewed the progress of work and told the state government that there had been no slip-up in meeting the deadline for each segment.
Given the current pace of work, the team feels, the construction should be over by March-end.
After that the road will be laid and other minor work such as painting will be done before the bridge is opened to traffic.
“The construction of pillars and viaducts is over and we have entered the last phase of construction, which involves the stretch over the railway tracks,” said a PWD engineer.
“We have decided to launch steel girders over the tracks from November, once the railway clearance comes.”
Railway officials who are monitoring the project said they had received a proposal for clearance to launch steel girders for the Tallah bridge. The nod is expected by October, they said.
The 750m-long Tallah bridge will rest on six piers each on the Shyambazar and the Dunlop end and another six in the middle that will support a 200m-long deck slab over the railway tracks.
