A new market will come up in New Town’s Action Area III, an official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said last week.

The three-storey building is being built by the NKDA and will have space for over two dozen shops, the official said.

New Town has over 10 NKDA-run markets and most of these are in action areas I and II.

“There was a long-standing demand from residents of Action Area III for a community market. The plan was in the master plan of the township and we will start building it now as the population of the action area has grown,” a senior NKDA official said.

Most residents of Action Area III are dependent on supermarkets that are below housing complexes and hawkers for their daily needs.

New Town has around 10 community markets. The markets house vendors selling vegetables, fruits, fish, flowers and other perishable items on the ground floor. The first floor generally has medicine shops, confectioneries, stationery goods, ration shops, tailors and dress material. In many markets, the second floor has a community hall.
