NDA presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu's scheduled visit to Kolkata on Saturday has been cancelled.
The cancellation was due to the one-day national mourning declared across the country as a mark of respect to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who was assassinated on Friday.
On the same day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Twitter that a one-day national mourning will be observed in India on Saturday, July 9, in honour of Abe.
"As a mark of respect to Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, one-day national mourning shall be observed on July 9. Therefore, all programmes of NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu stand cancelled for July 9, 2022," according to a statement issued by the state BJP.
Murmu’s visit is likely to be rescheduled at a later date. She has been visiting different states to seek support from lawmakers for the July 18 presidential polls.
Abe, 67, the longest-serving prime Minister of Japan, was assassinated in the west Japanese town of Nara while he was campaigning for his party.
