A 37-year-old man was found grievously injured and in a pool of blood at his house in Narendrapur on the city’s southern fringes, early on Sunday and died soon after at a hospital, police said.
Bhola Das had a bullet wound on his right leg. A country-made single-shot revolver and an empty cartridge were found beside him.
He was rushed to a hospital nearby, where he died.
The police have learnt that Das, whose wife and daughter had recently left for his in-law’s place, shared the house in Narendrapur’s South Laskarpur with four brothers, their families and his parents.
“A family member spotted a trail of blood outside the victim’s room around 3am on Sunday when he was going to the washroom. He raised an alarm,” said an officer of Narendrapur police station.
“When family members broke open the door, Das was in pain and struggling to breathe. He had a bullet wound on his right leg. He was rushed to a nursing home nearby, where he died.”
The family alerted the police after bringing Das’s body back home.
“The house where the victim lives has two gates, one of which is behind the other. Both were locked from inside when Das was found grievously injured. It was a tall order for someone to enter the house and gun down the victim,” another officer said.
Das worked as a sales representative for a mobile service company till he met with a car accident seven years back and gave up his job. Thereafter, he used to live on the pension his father drew, police said.
The police have not found any suicide note.
“Possibly no one heard the sound of firing because of the sound of rain on the asbestos roof of the house,” the officer said.
