A man has been arrested in Ranaghat in Nadia district for allegedly creating a fake Facebook profile in the name of Kolkata Port Trust and allegedly collecting money from job seekers with false promises of getting them employment in the organisation.
Police arrested Gobinda Barai from his Ranaghat home early on Tuesday.
The cops said they received a complaint from the chief vigilance officer of SP Mookerjee Port (earlier known as Kolkata Port Trust) in September that someone had created a fake Facebook profile of “Kolkata Port Trust” to allegedly lure job seekers with false promises of getting them jobs there.
“We received a complaint from the chief vigilance officer, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, following which we contacted Facebook seeking help about the details of the profile holder,” said an officer of the cyber cell at Lalbazar.
The police said that based on the inputs they received from Facebook, they could zero in on the IP address of the device used to open the alleged fake account.
“We found that the device was with Barai. He had forged and fabricated documents and electronic records of the Kolkata Port Trust and used them for cheating and harming the reputation of the complainant’s organisation,” said the officer.
Barai has been booked under sections of cheating, forgery, fraud, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
