The women filed a petition before the high court requesting a fresh probe into the
death of their husbands by the CBI.

The women appealed to the court to reopen the murder cases. They also wanted the case to be handed over to the CBI. They named Shahjahan Sheikh as the “mastermind” of the murders.

Adhikari told the media outside the court premises: “The widows are very scared. They came to me. They informed me that two close associates of Shahjahan were arrested in the incident
and chargesheets were submitted against them. Both the accused later managed to obtain bail with the active assistance of the Mamata government.”

He added: “These women are so scared that I had to keep them in an area which is under my control. They are now staying 100 kilometres away from Sandeshkhali and I will not take the name of the place for their safety.”

The widows’ case is likely to be heard by the high court next week.

The two women, whose husbands died in 2021, are residents of Sandeshkhali.
