Das and his pillion rider Kartick Naskar, 26, fell off the bike and suffered head injuries.

They were taken to Baghajatin State General Hospital where Das was declared dead. Naskar was later shifted to the trauma care unit of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital with head and leg injuries, the police said.

Neither were wearing helmets, the police said. “We are probing if the two-wheeler was overspeeding,” said an officer.

Das was a resident of Keorapukur in Haridevpur and Naskar is from Muchipara Road in Haridevpur.

Instances of two-wheelers meeting with accidents where none of the riders have helmets on are common across the city.

In many cases, the two-wheelers are found overspeeding with the rider losing control of the vehicle.

Police officers said that despite sustained awareness campaigns and prosecutions, the numbers of speeding two-wheeler riders are too many.

Four youths on two two-wheelers sustained injuries when their speeding bikes skidded on the Chingrighata-bound ramp of Parama flyover on Navami during Durga Puja.

The police had said that none of the youths were wearing helmets.
