A man in his late-20s died and three others were injured when two speeding motorcycles collided head-on in New Town early on Sunday, police said.
The accident took place near Balaka Abasan, behind Technopolis l, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
“Daniel Rai was riding one of the motorcycles, a Royal Enfield, with his friend Rahul Subba on the pillion. Rai lost control of the vehicle and hit a Bajaj Pulsar. Rai died of injuries,” an officer of the commissionerate said.
Abhay Singh, from Bhatpara, was riding the Bajaj Pulsar. His friend Dipika Dongre, from Kharagpur, was on the pillion. Rai was from Jaigaon in Alipurduar district, as is Subba.
All four were flung on the road under the impact of the crash. The police said none of the bikers and pillion riders was wearing a helmet.
“Rai hit his head on the median divider and was critically injured,” the officer said.
“He (Rai) was unconscious and had lost a lot of blood by the time he was wheeled in. We could not revive him,” said a doctor who attended to Rai at Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital. The other three were admitted to the critical care unit of a private hospital in New Town.
Bikers racing down the streets of New Town are a common sight late at night and in early morning, residents said.
