The woman accused of suffocating her newborn girl child to death at an Ekbalpore nursing home was arrested on Thursday.

Police said Lovely Singh, 21, has confessed of suffocating her child to death. Murder charges have been slapped against her.

Singh was produced at Alipore court on Thursday and remanded in police custody till October 25.

“She cannot be taken in custody as of now because of her health. She has confessed that she suffocated the her child because she had wanted a son and was disappointed after she gave birth to a girl,” said an officer of Ekbalpore police station.

Policemen have been deployed outside her cabin at the Ekbalpore nursing home.

The pillow used in the crime has been seized, the police said.

Singh’s husband had stayed with her on the next bed. He apparently told the police that he had stepped out of the cabin to get tea and came to know about his daughter’s death after coming back.

“We will also investigate whether there was any pressure on Singh from her in-laws. The husband will also be questioned,” said an officer.
