The New Town authorities have started repairing several stretches of roads across the township that had caved in after being lashed by heavy spell of rain last September.
New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started repairing a long stretch of road in front of the DLF New Town Heights housing complex in Action Area III.
A section of this road had caved in and was not repaired for over eight months.
According to an NKDA engineer, before a fresh layer of asphalt is placed on the stretch they were revamping the underground drainage pipe network.
New drainage pipes are being laid to ensure that there is no water logging in the area this year, said the engineer.
“The new pipelines have a higher capacity to drain out water than the existing ones,” he said.
Once the pipeline is laid, fresh soil will be placed and allowed to settle for a few days before a fresh layer of blacktop in placed, said the engineer.
The Telegraph had reported earlier this month that the New Town authorities was yet to start repairing the stretches that had caved in last year, leaving motorists and pedestrians at risk.
Portions of roads outside several housing complexes, including DLF New Town Heights, Eden Court and Sukhobrishti Housing Complex, had caved in after water accumulated on the roads and stayed on for weeks after a heavy spell of rain in September last year.
