The decomposed body of a Class XII student who also worked as a delivery boy for a food aggregator was found in a water body in the interiors of the Pragati Maidan area on Friday, two days after he was reported missing by his family.
Biswajit Mondal, 18, a resident of Mukundapur, had gone to his aunt’s place earlier this week and was visiting a fair at Khanaberia on Tuesday night when he was reportedly last seen alive.
Police said when he did not return home on Tuesday night, his family lodged a missing diary on Wednesday morning.
His body was found around 6.45am on Friday.
“The preliminary post-mortem report said his death was due to ante-mortem drowning. There were no injury marks on his body,” said an officer of the Pragati Maidan police station.
During the investigation, the police said they found he was last seen with his friends at the fair on Tuesday night.
“According to the statement of his friends, all of them were intoxicated and did not notice when Biswajit slipped out of their sight. They claimed they did not realise he was missing. They realised only the next morning when he was nowhere to be found,” said an officer who is probing the case.
The officer said according to the youth’s friends, they had an altercation with some men they met at the fair.
“But they said the matter was resolved and they parted ways amicably,” said the officer.
An unnatural death case has been started with the police. The police said no foul play had been detected till Friday.
The police said they did not receive any complaint from the family till Friday evening.
