A glitch in a crane engaged in the Metro construction work on EM Bypass led to a delay in the completion of work on Tuesday night, prompting closure of the stretch between the Anwar Shah Road connector crossing and the Ruby crossing.

The closure caused huge traffic snarls on the Ruby-bound flank of the Bypass on Wednesday and vehicles were diverted through a service road. Motorists headed north through the Bypass complained there was no prior notification of any diversion.

Debshankar Sinha, a Gariahat resident, said it took him about an hour to reach the Ruby crossing from the Mukundapur crossing, a distance he usually covers in 10 minutes. “I did not know that the main road was closed,” Sinha said.

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) officials attributed the disruption to a glitch in a crane.

“A crane lifting girders malfunctioned. Another crane was brought to replace the faulty one. That is why work got extended into the morning,” said an official of RVNL, which is building the New Garia-airport Metro corridor.

“Traffic curbs that are in place at night got extended into the morning.”
