The Indian Meteorological Department, Kolkata on Tuesday repeated its warning of rain or thundershowers with lightning at most places in south Bengal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Northeast and adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal a Low Pressure Area has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal,” IMD Kolkata said in its special bulletin on Tuesday.
The low-pressure area is very likely to trigger thundershowers with lightning over south Bengal in the next 48 hours.
For Tuesday, the Met office in Alipore issued a red alert — heavy to very heavy rain (07–20 cm) with extremely heavy rain (> 20 cm) — for “one or two places over East & West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas”.
The alert was orange — heavy to very heavy rain likely — for “one or two places over North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Jhargram districts.”
A yellow warning — heavy rain (07 – 11 cm) — was issued for “one or two places over Kolkata, East Burdwan and Bankura districts.”
For Wednesday, the red warning was for one or two places over West Midnapore and Jhargram districts, Bankura and Purulia districts were under orange and a yellow warning was in place for one or two places over Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Pargana, Souh 24 Parganas, East & West Burdwan districts.
Kolkata has been under one wet spell after another in the run-up to Durga Puja after a relatively dry August. Last week, Kolkata received a record amount rainfall that left various parts of the city waterlogged for days.
