The New Town authorities held a review meeting this week to monitor their preparedness for the monsoon.

A New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) official said several measures were in place to prevent the three action areas in New Town from getting flooded.

Many pockets of New Town remained under water a week after the city was lashed with heavy rain, in September last year, as the Bagjola canal and the feeders overflowed.

The official said this year the 235-km peripheral canal that cuts across New Town had been cleaned.

The NKDA has also conducted a clean-up drive of the gully pits and drains.

NKDA chairman Debashis Sen said apart from these steps, they were building four new pumping stations.
