Hurdles at multiple spots — VIP Bazar, Chingrighata and Metropolitan intersections — have delayed the progress of the project, which, once complete, will link New Garia and Airport via Salt Lake.

A curtailed 5.4-km stretch between New Garia and Ruby has received a conditional approval from the commissioner of railway safety. The corridor will be extended till Salt Lake Sector V by end-October 2023, said a statement from Metro Railway after this year’s budget.

The possible damage of underground CESC cables when the road is dug up came up at the meeting. An RVNL official said no underground CESC cables were found while another stretch was dug up in the vicinity. “We still asked CESC officials to be present when we start the digging,” he said. “The work should start within a week.”

At Chingrighata and Metropolitan intersections, traffic blocks are needed to bridge the gaps in the viaduct. “We will need trial runs (of the traffic block), which are possible only after the exam season,” said a police officer.
