A medicine dealer allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat and attempted the same on his daughter before hanging himself inside a first-floor apartment of a housing complex in New Town’s Narayanpur on Saturday afternoon.
Sagar Mukherjee, in his early 40s, was found hanging while Rupa, his wife, lay on the floor in a pool of blood when police reached the apartment in Havelock Towers on Sir Ramesh Mitra Road.
The daughter, a teenager, was rescued with injuries and admitted to a hospital near Chinar Park.
The police said they found a purported suicide note but did not divulge the contents.
Senior officers said it appeared that the man was struggling to repay loans he had taken for his business.
“Some financial issues might have been there,” said Gaurav Sharma, commissioner of Bidhannagar police commissionerate.
“The daughter is undergoing treatment. We will speak to her once she is in a position to do so,” Sharma said.
Mukherjee and his wife shared a cordial relationship with their neighbours, the police said after a preliminary investigation.
The man would leave his home early on a two-wheeler and return late at night.
Some of Mukherjee’s clients had failed to reach him on Saturday morning, the police said.
Towards afternoon, when one of them turned up at his apartment and knocked on the door, the injured teenager somehow managed to drag herself out and informed him about the incident.
The man alerted the neighbours and a police team arrived shortly.
“We will identify some of the deceased’s colleagues and speak to them, “ Sharma said.
Senior officers said they were examining the call details on the mobile phones that were recovered.
