Pradipta Das, 21, had attended all the classes on Monday and had returned to her hostel room around 3.30pm, police said. One of her roommates has gone to her home while the other one went out to eat when the incident happened.

According to Souvik Ghosh, who is one year senior to Pradipta, they came to know about the incident around 5pm. “Pradipta returned to her room around 4pm. Her roommate went outside to have food. When Pradipta did not respond, the roommate raised an alarm. We all rushed to the room and pushed open the door. She was hanging from the ceiling fan,” said Ghosh, who helped to bring her down.
The police said Pradipta is originally from Sodepur in North 24-Paraganas district. Youngest in her family, Pradipta is survived by her parents and an elder sibling. Her father is a retired police officer.
The body was taken to the morgue of NRS Medical College and Hospital where it would undergo post-mortem on Tuesday. The cops said they did not receive any specific complaint from the family till Monday night.
